Volunteering
WHAT IS VOLUNTEERISM?
The International Labor Organization is defining volunteering as: “activities or work that some people willingly do without pay to promote a cause or help someone outside of their household or immediate family”
Volunteerism refers to a wide range of activities, including traditional forms of mutual aid and self-help, formal service delivery and other forms of participation and civic engagement.
It is undertaken of free will, for the general public good, and where monetary reward is not the principal motivating factor. Most importantly, it is an expression of citizenship and an integral part of human relationships we engage in: inspired by the ideas of solidarity, commitment and engagement, volunteerism contributes toward the well being of communities and individuals alike (“Volunteerism in Turkey - A snapshot - exploring the Role and contributions of Volunteering” - UN Volunteers - 2013).
TWO KIND OF VOLUNTEERISM
C@rma is concentrating on two different kind of volunteerism:

Skill based volunteerism: The volunteer will provide his/her skills to support directly the organization in order to increase the efficiency of that organization. The volunteer could provide strategy advice or be a sounding board; they can give another view on the communication strategy or improve a training process..or they can even give some advice on the need for IT development for example. By providing these ideas, the organization will work more efficiently and will have more time to concentrate on its main tasks. The missions are well defined; they normally last 2-3 months with clear milestone. Most of the time, they can be done remotely.

Non skill based volunteerism: The volunteer provide his/her skills or time to support the activities of the organization; the volunteer might go reading in a school or pack goods; (s)he might raise money by running for the organization or support the organization in cleaning beaches.
In none of the cases the volunteer is paid by the organization. They are choosing to support their community because they want to have a social impact and they do understand it is the responsibility of each and every one to participate.
As in the donation, C@rma is not paid neither by the organization nor by the volunteer to help them to find each other.
HOW WE DO IT:

We are defining clearly the scope of work:

The NGO request is not for “volunteers” but for a specific volunteer with specific skill or with a commitment for a certain time frame

The volunteer knows exactly what will be asked from him or her and are not disappointed by reality not matching expectations

We are trying to put real deadline so that each party considers each other as a real counterparty/client/supplier. Although the deadlines are more floating, the NGO is entitled to get the skills when she needed it and the volunteer to have his/her time optimized;

We are showing which one of your facebook friends already volunteered for that organization; so that you can contact them and ask their feedback about the experience;

We are providing a way to evaluate the organization and the volunteer;

The volunteer can input his/her hours into the C@rma platform. This is validated by the CSO. We are calculating a theoretical hourly salary and we get a theoretical value of the help the volunteer provided. This is important for both sides
